Oh, and I think you meant "Why does it enthrall allanh so much?" I just giggle when I see it at a potluck, sort of like the tortilla cream cheese green chile rollups that are so prevalent here.
We just added four kinds of fresh mushrooms, sauteed in garlic, to the plain-vanilla version this year, and put the cheesy variety of the French's onions on top... Yum. (LOMLFOML got compliments for the beans themselves, by one of the guys who made his version from scratch to somewhat less satisfying results. "Straight from the can," he replied...)
He didn't just "dis" the coffee Crisp did he? oh no - OH NO HE DI'NT!
i actually found a store that carries them here in SF. (i have one freezing into a log of FLAVORGASIC joy - to have crumbled over vanilla ice cream soon)
Part of the mystique is that it's a food we usually only get once a year. For good or ill, it is linked with family get-togethers and the whole holiday mishegas.
For me personally, I love the combination of the creamy mushroom soup base and the starchy fullness of the beans, with a hint of crunchiness from the onions. I didn't have any this year (we had dim sum for Thanksgiving), and I definitely missed it.
So when one goes hunting for dakoopstes --in the appropriate season when they're at their peak, of course-- it would be most advantageous to bait the snare traps with green bean casserole? So noted! :-)
Coffee Crisp is a reminder sent to earth by God that He forgives our sins and there is indeed a Heaven. If I were a priest, I'd mass would be served with Coffee Crisp and Coke Classic. Our parishioners could heave each service simultaneously cleansed of their sins and with a light sugar buzz.
Now you're scaring me! Danny's all hot to go to an Ikea if one ever opens here...I've never been to one. I thought I was old enough and had enough wherewithall now that we'd buy pre-assembled, but I understand you have to put all their stuff together!
I haven't sampled them. Yet. And if they have chocolate in them, I'm sure I'd love em!
But then again, I was the naive one during a 1994 trip to England that bought a bunch of Toblerone (sp?) candy back, thinking it was exotic, only to find that it was a staple in the U.S.
Ikea is swedish for "some assembly required." There were five in the greater Toronto area. The Ivar shelving is great for workshops and toolrooms but I'm not fond of much else.
With careful shopping, IKEA yields some good buys on basic furniture. I think it takes at least one or two trips through the store to figure out exactly where their limitations become apparent, but what they do well, they do very well and very inexpensively.
it's the fabulous crunchy fried onion rings. We're all about the fried. In fact, if we could make green been casserole without the annoying vegetables, that would be even better
It's an easy, edible vegetable dish. Eating it makes you feel like you've had something healthy with all the potatoes and gravy and pie and whatnot. What more can you ask for?
It's a mystery
Date: 2007-11-24 04:19 am (UTC)we come from a different culture, m'dear. I think it's one of those things that will forever remain a mystery to us.

Date: 2007-11-24 04:22 am (UTC)The green bean casserole is so overwhelmingly easy to make, but still has the pretense of being a substantial sidedish, that it's become an US icon.
Eh?

What is it about Kraft Macaroni & Cheese that enthralls Canadians to the point of becoming an integral part of the Canadian lexicon? ("KD")
