A few days ago, Kent agreed we should arm ourselves appropriately with candy should the neighbourhood kids come trick-or-treating. What harm could it do?

When I was out shopping on Sunday, I bought a couple of bags of little Kit-Kat bars as they're something I always looked forward to when I was a kid. And I tossed in some M&Ms for variety. And then some Three Musketeers as Kent likes them. And things kinda got out of hand from there.

I was a good boy: I didn't touch the stash before Halloween. Not much, anyway.

And not a soul came to our door. Nada. We have 15 lbs of freakin' Halloween mini candy bars to give away and not a kid approached our house. Now I have to eat the entire basket of goodies myself.

BURN IN HELL YOU LITTLE TWERPS!

Throw the [unwrapped] M&M's & Kit Kat bars into a blender or food processor. Process into medium sized crumbs. Toss the mixture into a double boiler along with an appropriate amount of UNsweetened, BITTERsweet, or SEMIsweet chocolate. (With that much sugar and milk chocolate, I'd lean heavily towards UNsweetened or BITTERsweet myself.)

All of this work (it's not much work, really) makes a kickass dessert sauce. It can also be used as a cake filling or truffle filling.

Or so I'm told...

Oooo... that sounds intriguing. If any of it survives to the weekend, I may give it a try.

In the 10 yrs I've been in Ottawa now, not a single kid has ever come by trick or treating. We don't even try to buy stuff for them anymore. Enjoy the nummies.

with crushed kit-kat + chocolate sauce. mmmmmmm!

if you ask him nicely (or lick in the appropriate places) I'm sure he'll return the favour.

You might want to use dark-coloured sheets though. chocolate stains don't come out of white linens easily.

They probably don't come out of dark-colored ones any easier, but I guess they won't be quite as obvious (or quite as open to, um, misinterpretation).

But the real reason I'm responding is to say, "Wow! Look who's here!"

Nah, neither of us do mornings well. Midnight snack would be a better metaphor.

This is why Troy and I just go out to dinner every Halloween. Our first year in this house (and, thereby, this neighborhood) we had maybe three trick-or-treaters, and I don't recall any of them even bothering with costumes. At that point, we decided we'll just buy candy when we want it, and Halloween is a night out for a nice dinner.

Kent notes that Halloween is the best time to go shopping as families with kids are touring the neighbourhoods, not the shops & malls.

Babe, an uneaten bag of Kit Kats after Halloween in THIS house would be just oxymoronic. That or Reese's Cups.

I'm come over and help you get rid of em!

Those are two things I'd never waste on the bell-ringers.

Hmmm... next time we're in the same time zone, I'll lay down a trail of Kit Kats to see what happens... :-)

I think David said we had exactly 4 trick-or-treaters. As I wasn't on the ground floor no where near the door, I didn't care. More candy for me. Yum.

We were mobbed, as usual, but at least this year we didn't run out of candy.

We never get them. John thinks that in Cambridge the kids only go to the houses of people they know. We never even bother to buy candy.

I think one trick-or-treater showed up once, about 10 years ago. We had to send him/her away empty-handed.

Once you're on the trick-or-treater blacklist, you're socially invisible. :-^

Always buy junk!

That's why I buy stuff I won't eat! Jim bought some Kit Kats which were too tempting for me, so the little monsters that came to the door first, got lots of good stuff. The left over crap went to the coworkers today. I'm sure it's gone by now!

Kent is of the same mind as you: buy crap so we won't be tempted to nip into the inventory prior to Halloween, or cleaning up the leftovers after. I'm of the utilitarian mindset though that we should get something we like so that we won't be wasting anything left over. The snag is the quantity of leftovers at the moment. Even my office mates are sick of candy currently.

in theory, I'm with you and not kent on this one. But being diabetic is NOT fun at this time of year. (sigh)

as to "sick of candy" -- the shelf life of kitkats and similar munchies is considerably longer than post-halloween-candy-fatigue. Friday of next week - chocolate appetites will be back up to normal levels.
