I haven't posted much all weekend because I've been up to my ears in nearly non-stop birthday celebrations.

I turned 40 on Tuesday, Jan 30. [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr was in town the prior weekend for [livejournal.com profile] kent4str's concert with the LGCW concert so we had some minor celebrating of our own, including a birthday night on the town.

The three of us went square dancing in Baltimore where the Chesapeake Squares surprised me with round of "Happy Birthday," a card and cake --and had me call a tip 'cause, hey, ya gotta sing for your dinner.

Wednesday was our C1 workshop in Virginia. The gang gave me a card, Lloyd brought a stack of Coffee Crisp bars, Beth surprised me with a celebratory platter of lemon squares, Michael M. gave me a lovely gourmet chocolate bar & card and such.

Thursday evening was largely spent cleaning at home in preparation for an onslaught of guests for the weekend for the real birthday celebrations... [livejournal.com profile] jearbear65oh & David would be flying in from Columbus Friday night and various other local friends would be coming Saturday with the strong possibility of a number of guests spending the night.

Ever see Kathy Griffin's routine describing Barbra Streisand on Oprah some time ago? Notorious control freak Barbra was clearly a little freaked by Oprah's live on-stage unannounced surprises. Kathy's satirical ultra-high speed mumbling impression went something like, "Omigod, not in control... not in control... not in control..."

I spent much of Saturday sympathising with Barbra. )

One of the more horrifying traditions among a circle of friends of mine in Toronto was the passing of the dreaded gift.

This particular gift, still in its original shrinkwrap, began circulating decades ago. Whoever received it would be obliged to repackage it --preferably in some creative way to utterly disguise its nature-- then re-gift it to someone else at some future event --birthday, anniversary, housewarming, detox, whatever-- when they least expect it.

[livejournal.com profile] kent4str knew this tradition and contacted John S. in Toronto to see if the item could be located for the purpose of returning this particular abomination to my life. John couldn't locate it --no one would admit having it-- so he found an identical one on eBay and shipped it down to the US for us.

Behold, the faces of evil! )

Now I have to wrap up the damn thing and send it along to someone else. The only snag is that as my circle of friends age, we're getting closer & closer to the possibility of a heart attack, or at least to the point where "life imprisonment" doesn't mean much as it once did.
