Yesterday had more fat & sugar than can possibly be healthy for any given person. It was wonderful.

The work day started with the usual tour of hell with brief stops in limbo and purgatory but by noon, I was finally able to squirm out of the shackles, sneak past the prison guards and fight my way past the evil ninjas to attend our company division's fall picnic on the first floor. Everyone else was able to start by 11 AM but I'm not bitter. Well, not much.

In gratitude for our efforts on the Sarbanes-Oxley work and behaving ourselves during the congressional hearings, we were given some lovely polo shirts with "Unix Server Infrastructure" embroidered on the front. Yup, nothing displays the excitement of our jobs quite like drab, grey shirts with dark burgundy lettering. Go team. Yay.

All angst aside, the food was fantastic! I was stuffing my craw with steak, grilled chicken and barbecue ribs, and the array & quantity never seemed to stop. There was also a bountiful table loaded with Indian vegetarian fare, all of which were incredibly tasty.

Just when I thought I could eat no more, I discovered the dessert table. More precisely, I discovered the chocolate cake.

Chocolate cake

I carved out a very large wedge of cake which I slowly consumed over the course of two hours. Rich, dense, moist, chocolatey paradise. My pancreas hurt from the insulin demands placed upon it but the pain was worth every minute. The sugar hit my bloodstream about the time I was driving home so my commute is probably best estimated as a significant portion of the speed of light.

In the early evening, [livejournal.com profile] kent4str and I were to have a meeting with the rest of the 2009 IAGSDC organizing committee in downtown DC. I arrived about 20 minutes early --possibly from traveling back in time by exceeding the speed of light... is there a law against driving under in the influence of chocolate cake?-- so I killed time by wandering up the street to see if my Powerball ticket won anything.

Since I'm typing this instead of dictating it to my staff or having it ghost-written by Stephen King, you may safely presume I didn't win a thing. Bummer.

Having already wandered half-way from the meeting place to the liquor store/day care for winos to check my ticket, I decided to console myself for my ongoing impoverishment with a bittersweet chocolate milkshake at Sweet Lick's (17th & R Streets NW). Being in an unusually generous mood --probably the cake again-- I was even going to surprise [livejournal.com profile] kent4str with a milkshake as well.

Alas, this is where my education in the public school system of Ontario failed me miserably. While I am well equipped to give such a request to the store staffers in english, french, ASL and possibly even latin if assisted with charades & tap-dancing, I am utterly unable to describe such nectar of the gods to someone in spanish or whatever language they were using that I clearly couldn't. I wanted a milkshake of bittersweet chocolate, but I received instead a pint of regular chocolate ice cream tightly packed into a large styrofoam cup. Ah, well... I decided it was easier to change my mind about what I wanted, declare victory and grab two spoons.

It was pretty good ice cream anyway.

I was told the cake came from Costco, but I refuse to believe it: they must have smuggled in a chef from France or Belgium to produce such a delight. I even snuck down to the cafeteria this morning on the odd chance that there were leftovers hidden in the fridge, freezer, personal lockers, individuals' desks, secretaries' purses, etc.. Damn good cake.

I don't know.... it could have been Costco. We had a birthday cake for one of our regular dancers the other night from Costco and it was HEAVENLY - yellow cake with strawberries and cream filling covered with incredibly rich chocolate icing. My teeth hurt by the time I was through because I had to consume ALL of the large corner piece I cut for myself.

OMG! You know ASL??? When we finally meet, let's talk in Sign. I'm so rusty, and need to practice!

Sometimes victory depends on being able to change the parameters.

LOL

You know ASL???

Doesn't everyone? :-)

I'm seriously out of practice... there was a time --10 years ago-- that I used it daily and now I'm lucky to have a need once a year. *sigh*

There was a time when I was dreaming in ASL, and sometimes forgot the English word, though I could remember the Sign.

Those days are long past.

*sigh*

Wow. That chocolate cake looks phenomenal. Plus, "they" (the people who decide things) have decided that chocolate is good for you now because of the flavonoids. So really, you went on a health food kick yesterday. How boring.

BTW, have yet to find a Coffee Crisp bar here in NYC.

the way to "train" a cat is to observe closely, figger out what they're about to do, and then aloud tell it to do (whatever). The cat will do what you just told it to do. voila!

(don't they have a menu board that you could point to?)
