Hot, Hot, Hot!

The Weather Channel just reported the DC area can expect near record high temperatures today & tomorrow with a heat index of about 110 degrees F.

Have I mentioned in the last 30 seconds or so how grateful I am for air conditioning? Well, I am.

The power grid is really gonna feel this one...

Welcome to our life in the MinneApple lately. It finally broke last night and is raining today -- much, much needed. You have my deepest sympathy :)

I was build for cold rather than heat... Maybe I'll just hide in the basement freezer until, say, October...

[identity profile] london-bill.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel yesterday, with the heat index, we were at 118 here in Canada.. I think this is the worst year yet.
I hate the heat as well and would be hapy with it being spring all the time.

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's days like this that make me want to pack up & move back to northern Ontario. Winters were harsh but summers were at least dry when they were hot.

[identity profile] bigfundrew.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah...I was concerned because the kids summer camp is completely outdoors..we drop them off at a canopy in the morning and pick them up there 10 hours later..the only time they go inside is to go to the pool and that is not everyday...
but their mother just assured me that they will be taken inside today

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Good thing the kids will have a cool shelter. I have no idea how outdoor workers manage in this climate, but somehow humanity suffered through before the invention of electricity and air conditioning. Thank god we live in modern times!

[identity profile] cuyahogarvr.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not one to usually complain about the heat, but this year, it's been coupled with tremendous thunderstorms so it's hot, VERY humid and parts of northeast Ohio are major flood zones which means the humidity is becoming more and more unbearable.

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish we had thunderstorms. The forecast calls for isolated storms, but I've yet to see any of them materialize. I feel cheated.

[identity profile] cuyahogarvr.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
They have been spectacular and pretty predictable - every 3 days or so, but they really raise the humidity to the point that showers become an effort in futility. On the positive side, running outside is out of the question for me, so I do look forward to staying cool inside while getting my jog in.

[identity profile] paigemom.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
We're not supposed to go over 90 today.

And of course, there is no humidity. If we get 30% humidity, people think they're dying.

Which, of course, means my hair constantly looks like shit. My hair loves to get thick and curl in humidity :P

[identity profile] dendren.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
guess you'll just have to run around nekid all day to keep cool. Be sure to take movies of it... thank you.

At least you're down in the DC area, where people are generally friendly.

The NYCers are getting NASTY fast. If it's 110 heat index outside, it's probably at least 115-120 on those (not air conditioned) underground subway platforms. Positively stifling.

Walking down 181st street this morning on my way to the bus, I saw a number of people roaming around wearing water-soaked tee shirts on their heads like bedouins.

On the bright side, if you're an armpit fetishist, the trains are the way to go as there are multitudes of hombres wearing tank tops and grasping the overhead rails. You just might want a teensy umbrella if you're sitting on a chair nearby.

At least you're down in the DC area, where people are generally friendly.

You must be referring to some parallel universe DC which bears no resemblance to the one I live near. :-^

[identity profile] deege.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, yer talkin' about my hometown! Well, sort of....I lived in Maryland for my first 18 years.

Maybe I'm viewing DCers in a wistful, nostalgic light. Easy to do once one has been around Manhattanites for a while.

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps you were the sole source of DC's sweetness & light?

[identity profile] paigemom.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, compared with Manhattanites, DC is a very nice place...

*ducks for cover*

[identity profile] kent4str.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't listen to him! He's judging DC'ers by Canadian standards!

Then again, I have to keep reminding myself that the way you can tell a DC area native is the attitude - if they have one, they're not from around here, and there aren't many of us natives left.

[identity profile] moofedct.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You guys are getting the temps the west coast had last week. We've had 136 heat-related deaths this year!

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Was it as humid there as it has been here? I could handle either the humidity or the heat, but the combination is brutal. Someone please rouse me from cryogenic suspension when the climate becomes reasonable again.

[identity profile] moofedct.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Some areas were humid but in the central valley, it was just hot. The news reported that the death toll was actually closer to 164 than 13x.....

You win the Cutest Icon Paigemom's Seen All Day award.

What a cute puppy!

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The two-legged cute puppy is Sam; the four-legged one is Eric. :-)

[identity profile] moofedct.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
*blush*

[identity profile] moofedct.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Eric's an ADORABLE puppy!

[identity profile] rsc.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Boston is supposed to get something similar. Gloucester usually gets a break, but even a "break" from tomorrow's predicted temperatures approaching 100F isn't going to be pleasant. Oh, and anyway, we have to go to Boston tomorrow afternoon.

[identity profile] beldamon.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
According to our weather service, In Ottawa with the humidex, it feels like 47 Celcius, which calculates to 117 Farenheit...zoinks!

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Bleh! Ottawa certainly enjoys both ends of the temperature spectrum.

[identity profile] rlegters.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The NWS says we're going to make it to 72F today, but weather.com isn't going higher than 69F. The humidity is around 60%, though.

Just sayin'...

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, we needed that.

If I could move to Seattle, I would... sigh

[identity profile] ljtourist.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I really think you should. I know a lot of people (myself included) who would... welcome you properly.

But, yeah, we had that heat wave last week, and it sucked then, too. Everyone who told me I wouldn't need AC out here is a big fat liar. Fortunately I didn't believe them.

[identity profile] cuyahogarvr.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh... there's nothing like walking from a 72 degree office into the 95 degrrrreeee heat. Kinda takes your breathe away - like in January when you walk from a cozy 70 degree office into frigid below zero temperatures. Anyone seen "An Inconvenient Truth"? Days like today make you wonder?????

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I trade you this summer for your winter?

[identity profile] cuyahogarvr.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we could arrange somthing.... You could telecommute from my place during the months of December, January, and February, but kent4star may frown on that.
