Movie Night

Kent & I used to visit with Matt W. in NW Washington DC relatively regularly for movie nights. About this time last year, however, we fell out of the habit: Kent & I needed more time for square dance caller training and Matt started a new job which required a lot of ramp-up time. After a chance encounter with Matt while grocery shopping in another part of town two weeks ago, we decided to restart our regular get-togethers.

After Kent returned from work and had a chance to relax a little, I ordered chinese food for pick-up (crispy beef... mmmmm...), grabbed some of our DVDs to provide a selection for tonight's viewing and stuffed Kent into the car.

Dinner was good... Spring Garden at 16th Street above East-West Highway does good work --did I mention the crispy beef?-- and the order was ready very quickly. Matt's house isn't too far south of the restaurant so the food never got a chance to get cold in transit.

Matt has a fabulous basement home theater space with a sound system which can set off car alarms for blocks when cranked up to full. We narrowed down tonight's viewing options to two possibilities: "Serenity" and "The Matrix Revolutions." "Serenity" won... I like that movie a great deal (Kent bought me the DVD as a birthday present) and Matt was unfamiliar with the TV series "Firefly."

I hadn't watched the deleted scenes or outtakes previously... my favourite line:
"Kaylee, find that kid that's taking a dirt nap with baby Jesus; we need a hood ornament."

I guess you had to be there.

I loved that movie and loved the series even more. I didn't know about it until a friend lent me the boxset. It was worth the 12 hours of continous watching!!

I had missed the series on the first pass when it was on Fox, but watched it religiously when the SciFi Channel aired it leading up to the release of the movie. I really want to get the box set... I'm making a note to myself to go shopping for it when time allows.

I haven't seen the DVD yet (and hence the outtakes). Is that line from the scene where they're dressing up the ship to fool the Reavers?

Yup, that's the scene. It's preceded with (paraphrasing):
"Round up a number of bodies and tie them to the ship. Put Shephard Book in front: he was a friend, he deserves a place of honour."

Add Shephard Book?? Interesting, that adds a certain frisson to the whole scene that you don't get without that line.

I suspect that they cut the line because it mentioned Jesus; the religious aspects of Serenity's world are only vaguely defined, but it's clear that Christianity (if that's what Book represents) has changed a great deal. Mentioning Jesus probably would have been jarring.

Possible. I wondered if it was dropped because it was so jarringly funny that it broke the mood of the scene. Kent pointed out, however, it was in the outtakes rather than deleted scenes. Go figure.
