If it were me, I'd be entertaining thoughts like "So what do they say about us gays when they think we're not around", in addition to whatever racial junk is being tossed about. Which would feel crappy. So, hugs.
In one case, when (incredibly!) straight dancers in a straight club didn't realize that I was gay (oh, get over it; there ARE people in the world clueless enough to not peg me as queer!), they were quite openly talking with each other about, YOU KNOW, THOSE PEOPLE.
That kinda goes both ways. Some of the folks who wanted to change the name were pretty arrogantly obnoxious to anyone who mentioned that they had never thought of the call as being derogatory. Kind of like going to England and complaining when people use the term "fag" -- they're using some phonemes that you recognize, but they don't mean the same thing when they are saying them as how you are interpreting them.
