My home office also needs a vastly larger LCD monitor. My largest is only 14" or so... life would be much easier if I could have multiple windows open side-by-side.

No, seriously. My next Mac really needs to be a Pro (it's what I've needed all along, but I simply couldn't afford it), and a 24" monitor for that puppy ain't gonna be cheap.

It may be, depending on what you want out of the monitor...

If you only want resolution, and don't care about colour fidelity all that much, you can get 23" for about $500 (1920x1280).

If you really need in IPS panel for good colour reproduction, and an LED backlight, that will be expensive.

I don't claim to know how good the colour fidelity on the iMac's screen is, but it's pretty and I like it. :)

As I recall, the iMac screens are *not* IPS screens, but the 22 and 30" displays are (but not the 20"). I could be wrong. They may have changed it when they made the iMacs aluminium (current model).

Mine's a 24" model from two years ago. I remember there was some kind of stink at the time about claims of false advertising when Apple claimed "millions of colours" when one of the smaller models wasn't actually capable of it.
