My home office also needs a vastly larger LCD monitor. My largest is only 14" or so... life would be much easier if I could have multiple windows open side-by-side.
If you're just looking for the ability to have two documents side-by-side, Lenovo sells a fairly inexpensive wide aspect 19" 1440 x 900 LCD, model L197 for $239.00 list. I use mine mostly for AutoCAD so I can't really comment on the color fidelity. You can frequently find this monitor and it's predecessors (L193, L194) on sale; the Lenovo Outlet has new L194's for $175.00 this week.
Seriously, dude, upgrade. There are a lot of cheap options. I got a 17" wide screen monitor for $100 at TigetDirect over Christmas as I was upgrading my Windows PC weather station. I'm sure you can find something that fits within your budget.

Yeah, don't get anything that has less than a 1920x1280 resolution. (22-26")
