bjarvis: (DC Lambda Squares)

Here's the article which accompanies the cover image posted last night.

I like the article... while it may overplay the mental puzzle aspect of square dancing a little, I strongly prefer that to the awful hayseed, country bumpkin image.

Alas, references to [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr didn't make it in --we all met via square dancing-- but I'm guessing that those portions didn't fit with the writer's technical theme. One could write an entire other article on friendships, relationships & community ties in square dancing.

The tone or the article is supportive and modern although this paragraph is rife with errors, not the least of which is the misspelling of poor Ett's name all through the article:

"McAttee's fears about the future of square dancing may have merit, but it's not a hobby that looks to be headed to the graveyard in the near future -- not if the GLBT community is any indication. Consider this: The International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs (IAGSDC) lists 63 clubs. Along with the DC Lambda Squares and the Chesapeake Squares, our region boasts Philadelphia's Independence Squares; the Raleighwood Squares in Durham, N.C.; and the Delmarvelous Squares in Rehoboth Beach, to name a few. Expand the search and you'll find the Edo 8s of Tokyo or Copenhagen's Mermaid City Squares."

Aren't two of these groups defunct?

Yeah, I think the proper IAGSDC membership is closer to 59 at the moment; I suspect he looked at the IAGSDC web site without reading or interpreting the legend which indicates active membership. And the name of our fall festival is "Harper's Ferry Hoedown". And, yes, they misspelled [livejournal.com profile] justetthon's name.

Raleighwood Squares and Mermaid City Squares I believe are defunct; I thought Edo 8s are still active but wouldn't bet the family farm on it.

aarrgh... factually challenged

Edo 8's are indeed still very much active. and yes, Will (the author) should have checked his facts, perhaps running the rough draft by at least one of us before publishing. MY NAME! good grief. I think I even spelled it for him as I interviewed with him on the phone. But, the gist of the article is good, and I'm sure will be much appreciated. So, Brian, photoshopping out the "slinging porn"?? Everybody noticed THAT aspect of the cover!

Bad reporter! No biscuit! Was he asleep the day they told him in reporter school to double check name spelling a million times, even if it's Sam Smith?

So says the current journalism major...

In a nutshell, from a technical standpoint, you were definitely the right person to contact! :-)

And, of course, we now have the Delmarvelous Squares in Rehoboth Beach, DE, and the James River Squares in Richmond - so it kind of evens out.
