Saturday Summation
Aug. 24th, 2008 07:57 amIn all, it was a surprisingly good day. I don't have many of those, especially where extended family is involved. Make a note of it 'cause it probably won't happen again for a long, long time.
We started early by heading off to the Western Market to peruse the vegetables, fruits, pastries and meat at the vendors' stalls. Never go on an empty stomach. I was, however, a paragon of restrain and only walked out with a couple of beef- and chicken-filled buns for lunch.
The urge to blow the entire $30k limit of my Mastercard on chocolate was immense but I persevered. The economy will now crash (OK, it's Cleveland... crash further) because of it but too bad.
We collected square dance calling equipment from Brian K. on the way home, had lunch at Casa Vannello/
ohwolfman, followed by a quick nap. By 2:30 PM, we were on the road to the wedding.
Why the square dance calling equipment? The wedding ceremony was to be outdoors, on the lawn of a small convention center and golf course: while the setting was lovely, no one past the first two rows of guests would be able to hear the ceremony, the "I do"s or even the processional/recessional music.
kent4str and I were able to quickly set up speakers, a mixer/amp and a microphone; we also attached his Mac Book to play the music at the appropriate intervals.
And the wedding was lovely. Everyone said the right things at the right times, no one fainted or died and the weather was flawless, save for some occasional heavy wind. The wind was occasionally knocking flat the framed photograph of the bride's late mother, but
kent4str's cell phone clipped to the back weighted it enough to keep it stable until we could take down the equipment following.
The reception was very nice too. We had been warned of possible drama --the groom's parents/grandparents were rumoured to look none-too-kindly on the devil spawn heathen (aka, the gays) but they were actually quite charming and well-behaved.
cuyahogarvr's ex was a perfect gentleman, although he didn't say a word to either
kent4str or me through the entire day and snuck out inconspicuously as soon as the ceremonial dinner, first dance, garter, bouquet portions were completed. I would have liked to have chatted with him a little but perhaps the time isn't right yet. Hopefully, some time soon.
And the buffet dinner was fantastic. It's sweet being at the table of the bride's father: you're next in line after the wedding party proper.
BTW, the bride & groom's first dance: the groom can't dance to save his life. No, really: typical completely awkward, uncoordinated, clueless white boy. Damn funny, though.
We were on the road shortly after 10 PM, heading back tocivilization Cleveland and bed soon thereafter. Much snoring was had.
