bjarvis: (Chesapeake Squares)
Kent & I called for the Chesapeake Squares club night last night, two hours of Mainstream through A2. And it seemed to be a success.

Attendance was down because of a competing theater event, but since the club knew that would be an issue, we made a particular point of inviting the new dancers from the Saturday Mainstream class to attend with the promise of class-level MS calling. Because they've only had two class sessions, it was a relatively limited square dance vocabulary (god, what I would have done for the ability to call "circulate" or "run") but we managed adequately and gave them three tips, more than any other level.

For fun, Kent & I shared a couple of tips. In one tip, we alternated figures. In another, we alternated calls. Working together is an interesting experience: he sometimes forgets who is who's partner/corner, while I sometimes miss blatantly obvious get-out opportunities. What's a marriage for if not mutual rescue from each other's folly? :-)

My sight-calling of Plus was quite possibly the best I've done to date, and while my A2 tip was less than perfect, it was still vastly better than my prior work so I'm declaring victory. As I write this, I'm working on incorporating some ideas into new choreo for the next opportunity, possibly as early as this Thursday at DC's A2/C1 club night.

We'll miss this Saturday's MS class as we'll be out at the trailer in West Virginia; our next scheduled Baltimore gig is Oct. 18.

In many ways, the data center in which I work is still under construction and a work in progress. A couple of days ago, I noticed extra parking lot lighting being installed and some work being done along the west side, adding lighting to the parkette outside the lunch room.

Today, however, I noticed that someone installed plastic wall-mounted sign holders on the inside of the men's room door. At first, it struck me as rather silly: (1) it's too high for anyone of average height to read comfortably, and (2) anyone pausing to read news displayed there is going to get whacked with the door by someone entering.

After I returned to my cube, I realized the really stupid aspect of the new sign holder: it still contains the original Staples sales insert.

First the fun part... )

Now the horror... )

Long-time DC Lambda Squares caller Warren Jaquith offered a while ago to let me dig through his record collection to see if there's anything which appeals. We'll probably get together next week for dinner and some light listening and/or wretching, depending on the label.
