I hear that Chris Ricciotti recently suffered a severe hand injury requiring surgery. There was a collection taken up for him at the recent Boston Uncommons fly-in to help with his expenses. Does anyone know if there's a mechanism by which friends of Chris who weren't at the fly-in can contribute? Any pointers are welcome!

It's a lot of fun to dance. I had seen it done a bunch of times before I learned it myself, in a workshop that we had at LCFD dance camp. Before then all I really knew was that the man and the woman had different footwork. Now I sort of know both parts.

Many contra dance groups will open the second half of the evening, after the refreshment break, with a Hambo. The band will just sort of start it up, and those who know it will come out and dance it, and that signals to the rest of the crowd that the remaining contras of the evening will follow.

Sometimes, if the band is able to, and they are feeling like being "traditional" about it, the players will go stand in the middle of the dance floor and play from there. That may, of course, be only part of the band. On the night in question, just the fiddler and the concertina player were there, but that's plenty for a Hambo, since the melodies define the beat so well even without any accompaniment.

Try teaching it to a bunch of two steppers who don't do any other folk dancing! The routine we did at the NYC Hoedown on Memorial Day had us Hamboing in cassocks. It was frightening. Thank whomever that I had jobbed Chris in to help me teach it.
