Weekend Report
Aug. 21st, 2006 09:17 amSince work was particularly ugly this week, I was happier than usual to get away from DC and off to the trailer. Anywhere would be better than DC.
The trip itself was kinda uneventful. Kent drove the entire way. In a small compromise for having left work early, I dialled in to two conference calls, neither of which were particularly pressing but it was a small sacrifice for keeping my superiors contented.
It took only an hour or so to unpack everything at the trailer and prepare a quick dinner of chicken burgers.
kent4str and I had the place to ourselves 5 PM to almost 9.
Ron Fridley from Columbus, OH, showed up first: he wasn't staying with us but was using our trailer to store his alcohol.
jearbear65oh and David arrived shortly after 9 PM with a couple of surprises in tow: Maggie and Beau.
Maggie isn't the brightest dog on the planet. Not even close. Beau is dumber yet: I've never met a dog before whose attention span was so short that he had to be ordered to eat. Both dogs could probably use a hefty dose of Ritalin. They are generally well behaved, but they're indoor dogs and space inside the trailer was relatively tight with four adults. Better still, Scott & Phil called to say they were toying with visiting the trailer Saturday evening overnight for a total of six adults and two dogs.
Despite being exhausted, I slept restlessly Friday night and late into Saturday morning. The weather was unexpectedly hot and humid so finishing the staining of the deck was not on the activity list for the day; in fact, most of us napped in the early afternoon. Jerry & David spent some time down by the pool while Kent & I read and dog-sat.
I finished reading through the C1 square dance definitions in Vic & Debbie Ceder's guide, typed the minutes from the latest 2009 IAGSDC convention planning meeting and began preparing a series of sample dance sequences for the upcoming Mainstream class in September. This may sound like work, but it's how I like to relax: in solitude with my thoughts and personal projects.
All of us napped in the late afternoon before rousing ourselves for dinner preparations. Phil & Scott decided at the last minute that they couldn't make it to Roseland Saturday so we had our trailer neighbours Bob & Bob over for dinner instead. It was The Bobs who made the first effort to bring
kent4str and I to Roseland in 2003 and since we've borrowed cooking supplies, kitchen widgets and general landscaping tools back & forth, a dinner together was long overdue this season.
Dinner was lovely: grilled chicken, a zucchini medly and saffron rice with a peach pie for dessert. There would be enough leftovers to feed us Sunday.
Feeling unusually social,
kent4str and I went down to the rec hall in the evening to schmooze with the other campers. I think this is only the second time this season I've gone out on a Saturday night... like I said, I prefer to relax with my own projects. We struck up a conversation with someone we noticed earlier in the weekend: Woody, from Pittsburgh. He's a pleasant guy, staying in one of the guestrooms with a friend of his, Tom. We're hoping to see more of him soon, possibly at the upcoming ASGRA rodeo in DC in mid-September.
Because of high humidity and more intermittent showers, it was too wet to complete staining the deck on Sunday. Instead, we slept late, did some cleaning and generally prepared to depart for home. We were on the road by 4 PM and despite heavy traffic forcing a detour via Hagerstown, MD, we made good time back to DC.
