It's been an odd day already...
Mar. 7th, 2006 08:06 amThis morning, I'm working out of our Reston, VA, office... my big documentation project is being launched this morning with a meeting with the technical writer assigned to me. I'm very early for that meeting but traffic around DC sucks so badly and I despise bumper-to-bumper traffic so I beat the rush by getting here at an ungodly hour.
So far, I've cleaned up a number of issues from the night shift and written a job description for a technical writer for one of my directors. I'm a little confused... don't we have such a description on hand? How did we hire the other ones currently working for us if we didn't? I suspect this is one of those questions I'm not supposed to ask openly...
Of late, I've had a series of interesting dreams. Most of my dreaming is typically fragmented, a series of short, non-linear narratives which pop in & out of my head across the course of the night. The past week or so, I've had extended stories, one per night, each tremendously detailed.
Two nights ago, I dreamt of arranging a dinner date with
stripedtiger via telephone (Reality: we've never met in person although I'd like to some day). Over the course of the dream, we met up at a french restaurant and spent two hours conversing over dinner. I can't recall the main course but we both adored the chocolate mousse. I picked up the check, paying with a Discover card (Reality: I don't have a Discover card). I drove him back to his place in a red 2005 Grand Am (Reality: I have a green Honda Civic LX). He invited me in and suffice it to say that the rest of the night & early morning --and the bulk of my dream-- was a lot of fun... (Reality: I repeat, we've never actually met. Yet. I'm sure I've scared him off now.)
Last night, I dreamt I was the night shift manager of a small hotel in the downtown of a large metropolis. My hotel was ten stories, with six large rooms/suites per floor and two elevators. The local electrical company was performing essential maintenance outside our building so we would be without electricity 11PM to 11:45 PM, so I had to warn our clients, as well as ensure no one was in the elevators when the power was cut.
At one point, I was giving directions to a German couple. The downtown core of the city was located on an approximately circular island, a large park dominating the center and easily 50% of the surface area; the buildings of the city formed a rough ring around the central park with the tourist & service sector zoned to the outer most ring, adjacent to the waterfront areas (my hotel was in the south-south-west sector, at about 7 PM, but inland from the waterfront making us only a 1-star hotel). Numerous bridges and at least two tunnels connected the island to the mainland to the east and south. The city's expansive airport was on the landmass to the east and was named after Ronald Reagan.
Reality: I have no idea what the name of the city was or where it was located. The map was so detailed that I'm inclined to think my subconscious was dredging it up from some distant memory but I can't think of where/when/what. And I've never worked at a hotel, but I hope that if I ever do, it has a backup generator.
I'm not sure why my dreams have been so detailed of late, but they're kinda fun. I like the coherence and leisurely pace. I just hope that nightmares, should they arise, aren't as long & intricate.
