I started Saturday morning by having my hair cut over in the Friendship Heights neighbourhood of north-west DC. It's times like this I wish I had more hair, or at least hair that grew fast enough to justify having it cut more frequently: my barber gives a wonderful scalp, neck & shoulder massage. I never want to leave his chair, but on Saturdays there's always a line of men waiting for their trim. Visiting his shop early in the morning makes the rest of my day impervious to worry or want.

Being in a somewhat indulgent mood, I visited the grocery store across the street to if fresh Krispy Kreme donuts were in stock. Indeed, they were! Ah... lunch! And by happy coincidence, dear friend Matt W. was also shopping there. Neither of us live anywhere near this grocery store so it was an extremely unusual coincidence we'd meet up there --perhaps less a coincidence that it was the fresh fruit section-- but it was nice to catch up with him for a few minutes. Kent & I used to drop by his house for movie nights as he has the most extraordinary home theater occupying the bulk of his basement. We promised to compare calendars later in the week to see when we could next get together for movies & chinese food.

Bread & Roses, the local lesbian chorus had a concert performance in the afternoon in Gaithersburg. It was a short program --the entire concert was about an hour in length-- but lovely nonetheless with the debut of a commissioned work, some wonderfully artistic pieces and at least three short comedic works. Who says lesbians don't have a sense of humour?

From there, we headed to Harper's Ferry, WV, to spend the rest of the weekend with Vic & John. We met them during our square dance club's fly-in in Harper's Ferry almost three years ago and while the four of us have been meaning to get together on a weekend since then, timing hasn't worked out very well for any of us.

Vic loves cooking and does it very well: I was constantly stuffed with food, even more than I was at xmas time. I'm going to spend a lot more time on the exercise bike this week to wear off the extra pounds. The first room of their home is what used to be a single-room log cabin, circa 1860; it's now a lovely sitting room dominated by a very large stone fireplace at the north end. I spent a large block of time curled up in a comfy chair either chatting or reading while listening to the fire crackle, feeling the warmth on my skin.

Alas, nothing --including weekends-- lasts forever so we had to say our goodbyes Sunday afternoon and return to the not-quite-so-romantic world of catching up with bills and doing laundry. My blood pressure is significantly lower though. Ahhhhh.
