Scheduled Maintenance

bjarvisI had two fillings in my upper left jaw replaced this afternoon. The anaesthetic has long since worn off and while my teeth don't hurt per se, my cheek & jaw ache from the repeated stretching, pushing & prodding. Ow.
The replaced fillings weren't causing me any problems. My dentist decided from recent x-rays and based on the age of the fillings (20+ years) that they should be replaced. Since when do dental fillings have a best-before date?
I'm wondering if my dear dentist simply had a boat payment coming up soon...
