We slept in again. This was particularly easy to do as we didn't get to bed until close to 3 AM, but even if we hadn't, it's one of the things I particularly like to do any day I don't have to go to the office.

For the most part, we spent the late morning & early afternoon simply lounging around the house in Lancaster. I played with the dogs, chasing each other around the house and playing tug-of-war with a sock toy. Beau is a year-old pure bred golden retriever; Maggie is half retriever and about five years old. Beau occasionally has moments of intelligence but it's a passing thing: his fur may be golden, but deep down, he's a blond. My theory was that Maggie was essentially his role model as she's an unabashed moron. This weekend, I realized that [livejournal.com profile] jearbear65oh is actually his role model so I've since apologized to Maggie for thinking ill of her.

In any case, the two dogs combined have an IQ approaching that of a walnut but they're very enthusiastic & loving, kinda like a handful of men I know. While playing mind games with them isn't quite as satisfying as doing it to Kent, it was an enjoyable afternoon nonetheless.

Towards 4 PM, we packed our luggage into the car and headed to Delaware, OH, to visit with friends Rik & Rob. They've been gutting & remodelling a lovely Victorian house for a number of years. While we've seen frequent photos, they can't do justice to the extent of the work they've needed to do or how far they've progressed. I can see how they could fall in love with the grand old place, envisioning it at its prime in the early 1900s and how hard they've had to work to rescue it from the "updates" the interim owners had made. They definitely have more patience for this project than I could... I'm sure I would have bulldozed it into a heap & started from scratch rather than undertake the restoration.

After a lovely meal at a nearby Mexican restaurant --at which I spilled a large dollop of bright orange-red salsa on the front of my white shirt-- we headed to the airport and flew home. Marginal weather delayed our SouthWorst flight in Chicago by a half-hour but since our plane was only half-full at best and we were in no rush to get home, the return trip was uneventful. About half-way into the flight, I had a sudden (and unexpected) inspiration for some A2 figures so I amused myself by scribbling notes on the back of a napkin.

Returning to work isn't exactly filling my heart with joy --I'm beginning to think I need to start looking for a new job-- but it was nice to sleep in my own bed once again.

I've met goldens who were incredibly smart and others who would lose a battle of wits with a foot stool. My personal theory is that it has a lot to do with their early puppyhood and the environment in which they were raised (kinda like children) but I'm definitely no expert.

Photos of the pooches will be posted this afternoon/evening.
