The junior clerk at the shipping & receiving department of the data center I visit regularly is now driving a brand new Audi.

I'm sure there's a story in there somewhere. It may be as simple as: I'm in the wrong line of work.

More than likely the answer is "bad budgeting"

Or, maybe "Sugar Daddy".

Either way, be sure to tell him that's a lot of money for a Volkswagon.

Or he simply borrowed the car for the day, perhaps from a parent. Bo (yup, that's his name) is young and very hot so if one is into scruffy, blue collar pups, sugar daddy while unlikely isn't entirely out of the question.

Either way, be sure to tell him that's a lot of money for a Volkswagon.

Ouch! I'll try that. :-)

Or maybe you never learned to borrow more than you an afford to pay back... Modern America is founded on the principle of instant gratification - regardless of whether you can afford it.

If that's the case, there is a cruel reckoning in his future. I just hope I'm around to "help" when he's vulnerable. :-)

Could be a lease. I had a co-worker who would lease a porsche. Said it made her feel good. I tried to point out that for the money she spent leasing the car for 3 years, she could have owned another car, but she didn't care. As long as she could make the payments, she'd drive a car beyond her means.

I haven't owned a car since 1992

.
My suspicions are along the same line as [livejournal.com profile] abqdan. LOTS of people live beyond their means. Once you have a regular job with a regular paycheque (er, in his case, paycheck), credit companies are quite prepared to lend significant numbers of $$.

at least it's a prudent tangible asset, as opposed to vacations or frivolities.

You need to hone your pimping skills Brian. It's what you do *after* work that counts!
