I clicked the "submit" button for my tax filings last Saturday. Today, the state of Maryland deposited $82 in my account. Yay!

My eyes are on you now, federal Dept of the Treasury. Don't keep me waiting!

That should buy a suitable sundae.

I get money back from the feds (it's amazing what buying a house does), but thanks to one of the federal forms I can't eFile, so I have to USPS it instead. :(

look at it this way (he said, resolutely finding a bright side) -- when you file a paper return, THEY keep all the receipts, you don't have to; unlike e-filing.

moi, I've still got information slips to arrive and charity receipts to arrive - they have until 28 February to mail them, so I usually get to file the first w/end in March.

Alas, the IRS doesn't let you do that. I file the return and have to keep a copy (and the associated receipts and records) for 7 years — and depending on the asset, that time may be even longer (e.g., cost basis for stocks) — if I remember right. I don't have a problem keeping the records (heck, I've got tax returns dating back to befoe I graduated college); I have a problem getting rid of them.

That said, between the new house (first-time buyer credit plus deductions of the mortgage interest and real estate taxes) and the car (Hybrid credit and deduction of the sales tax), I'm only pissed at having to paper-file in that it adds a delay to my getting the $$$$$ back.

I remember back around 30 years ago, when I sent in my income tax payments to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the April deadline, the check wouldn't clear until June or July. And people wondered why the state had cash flow problems.

Things have changed since then.
