Around 9am today, we hit the road for exciting metropolitan Lancaster, PA. I've never been and weren't quite sure how we targeted that particular city but [livejournal.com profile] kent4str was driving and I didn't feel like hitchhiking onwards we went.

The first stop was the local farmers market. I wasn't especially in a shopping mood but [livejournal.com profile] kent4str and [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr were all over the place like Oprah on a smoked ham. Various sauces, meats and confections were purchased --I even paid for two of the pies (one peach and one apple). (By some oversight, both pies still exist but I intend to remedy that as soon as I finish posting this.)

We stumbled across a British import shop in a neighbouring shopping mall. While [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr was fairly restrained with his selection of curries, I went a little nuts on the chocolate & candy section:

Our next stop was the railroad museum in Strasburg, PA. We were just in time to get on the 2pm ride on an authentic steam-powered passenger train for a short 45 minute ride, just up the road to Paradise, PA, and back.

There were several seating options, including first class, dining car, coach and open-air coach. We opted for the open-air coach as the weather was superb.

While chugging along the railway, we were buzzed a couple of times by two ultralights. Now that looks like fun!

We stopped at the Toy Train Museum on the edge of town, then stepped next door to the Red Caboose Motel. Yes, you can spend a night or more with a somewhat upgraded railway caboose as your motel room. We didn't check out any of the cars although we did have dinner in the motel's dining car.

We wrapped up some time around 6pm and decided to head for home. In all, we logged 11 hours and 250 miles in travels today. Excuse me now while I go attack the pie.

Being moist, pie ages & goes bad much faster than chocolate. While I'd prefer to dive into the newly acquired chocolate, I still have a pound of dark chocolate almond bark from last weekend in inventory (I think I've knocked back 1.5 lbs since last Saturday).

I did tackle a Mars bar and Coffee Crisp before dinner though.

ah yes, shelf life. I had forgotten to take that into account.

I spent my teen years near Valley Forge, not too far from Lancaster. I miss the greenness of it all and the heavy smells of summer. Malls—not too much.
