iMac Victory!

It took some effort to dismantle the old iMac but I was able to extract the old 60 GB hard drive and replace it with a 320 GB disk. After putting it all back together, I was happy to hear the standard Mac boot chime and watch it boot up from an external USB clone disk. The new disk has been recognized by the system and successfully formatted.

As I write this, the data is being restored to the new disk. In another 12-14 hours, all will be done! Yay!

I enjoyed putting not only a larger disk into one I bought for £50, I also increased the memory to the "legal" limit, which is a real annoyance because of the way that the memory chips are seated inside. The iMac wasn't made to be tinkered with by users, I guess.

Yeah, I did the RAM upgrade earlier in 2008. I still can't understand why the two pieces of RAM are completely different and incompatible formats but there it is. And this model definitely wasn't meant to be upgraded or modified by mere mortal... oy!

Some designer decided that the RAM on each side of the daughter board needed to be a slightly different size. Faugh!

Is yours a CD-tray or CD-slot?

I enjoy working with it occasionally, but it's really too slow for anything except playing music and leisurely surfing. We have it in our spare room for the use of guests, if they wish.

Wonderful! I've always admired my platform of choice for beign able to so easily do what Windows has such a hard time with. ARC paths be damned!
