I left work yesterday feeling disappointed and bitter. Well, more than usual.

I had installed some device drivers on a test machine per the orders of Those Higher In the Food Chain Than Me, and the install bombed badly. Really badly. I spent two hours trying to undo the damage and figure out what went wrong. When I was about to admit my utter failure, I learned the drivers were expected to fail. They knew all along there was almost no possibility of success... they just wanted to confirm their suspicion on this particular test platform and didn't bother to tell me! Grrrr.

Late last night, I re-imaged the machine and updated the patches. This morning, I swapped out the SAN fibre cards with a different set and re-installed the drivers successfully. All is good, but I'm still more than a little pissed that I was set up to fail, that they didn't bother to communicate everything they knew about this project and that my time and effort clearly carries no value to these people.

Still...

The machine is up and running with a completely fresh software installation and good hardware. This good.

I bumped into a colleague from another division this morning while badging in; he had two dozen donuts for his team and urged me to take one. Free donuts always start the day well. This is good.

A server I've been trying to retire for months was finally removed from the data center last night. This is also good.

Today is Friday and payday. Both are excellent.

Perhaps I'll have a sundae at lunch today.

well that IS pretty rude of them.

do you suppose one of the side-effects of the fail would be to dump significant amounts of error message email into the inboxes of those higher up the food chain who should a) have known better and b) should have better personnel management skills?

In the words of The Mikado, that would let the punishment fit the crime, surely.

maybe too late for this iteration, but what the heck - revenge is a dish best served cold. don't get mad, get even.
