Last Plus Class!
Apr. 15th, 2008 09:39 amLast night, we had the last class of 14 in our Plus level square dance course. It's been frustrating on occasion but lots of fun. Still, I'm sure the new Plus dancers and the class angels are as relieved as I am that it's over... supporting the extra evening of dancing per week can be a strain on energy, time and resources.
Our plan is to have a graduation ceremony this coming Thursday at our regular Mainstream/Plus night. Our graduations are low-key affairs: cake, distribution of diplomas and a group photo. We don't make the newbies endure embarrassing or degrading rituals, dress in funny costumes or the like. For fun, I'll dress in my university MSc cap & gown as I distribute the diplomas while "Pomp & Circumstances" plays but that's as far as we go.
We had a committee meeting on the upcoming fall square dance fly-in before the Plus class. Half of the new fly-in committee is new blood, half veterans like me; this meeting involved a lot of information sharing, describing what has worked in the past, what we'd like to change and what we'll need to change to accommodate our new venue.
I'm angling for more GCA calling slots and Abe is pushing for more C2 tips; a draft dance schedule is still being created so we'll see how this goes together. We're also assembling a list of callers we'd like to propose for the 2009 fall fly-in.
The DC Lambda Squares have developed a tentative class schedule for the latter half of 2008 and early 2009:
The instructors are yet to be announced. I'm OK if they wish to pursue someone else to teach; distributing the work around to other local callers is a politic move and increases the pool of talent available to the club. That, and I'm a bit tired right now and would like a break.
On the flip side, even if we are approached to teach, this might be a good time for
kent4str and I to discontinue joint teaching to ensure neither of us burns out: I'd be fine with, say, me teaching Mainstream and
kent4str teaching Plus. (I'd happily teach Plus and give him the MS level if he wished and the club approved, but I think he'd be happier with Plus. That, and I have some further thoughts of approaches to Mainstream I'd like to try.)
