We've survived our 9th Advanced & Challenge square dance fly-in in Washington DC. For as long as I've been helping out, this was probably our smoothest performance yet.

I took the bulk of Friday off work to get the fly-in registration desk set up. [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr came downtown with me, and thank god too: we had two sound systems, stationery for the registration table, signs for the table & halls, check-in lists, misc flyers and our own luggage.

Set-up and sound checks went perfectly although I needed to re-arrange some furniture in the dance spaces. With all in place, I had nearly two hours of time to kill before the dancers arrived.

We had callers [livejournal.com profile] cjsmith, Mike Jacobs, Dave Wilson and [livejournal.com profile] justetthon working three halls from Friday night through Saturday afternoon. I had never met [livejournal.com profile] cjsmith previously and while I had danced to Dave Wilson in the past, it wasn't at C1 --I also don't recall him previously being quite that diabolical in his choreo although I may have simply blanked out those episodes. I recorded approximately 30 tips for transcription and analysis... I have a lot of work to do on that in the near future.

The GCA calling hour Saturday night went well. [livejournal.com profile] kent4str emceed while Osamu Miyabe, Lee Griffiths, Ken Sale and I alternated A2 and C1 tips. There were precious few dancers that late in the evening but we were happy to have them there for the ride.

LJ sightings: [livejournal.com profile] cuyagarvr, [livejournal.com profile] kent4str, [livejournal.com profile] raperez, [livejournal.com profile] lggriffiths, [livejournal.com profile] ann0625, [livejournal.com profile] apparentparadox, [livejournal.com profile] markens, [livejournal.com profile] davidlevine, [livejournal.com profile] kateyule, [livejournal.com profile] deege, [livejournal.com profile] discord35, [livejournal.com profile] greyguy_sf, [livejournal.com profile] zipperbear, [livejournal.com profile] zzbear, [livejournal.com profile] sfbearhoney and [livejournal.com profile] stormecho, in addition to callers [livejournal.com profile] cjsmith and [livejournal.com profile] justetthon.

I also didn't take anything like as many photographs as in prior years but I hope to have the lot on my website some time soon. In the interim, I offer:

That's a lot of cute guys! BTW, I think you missed listing [livejournal.com profile] sfbearhoney, since he's in the upper picture.

Doh! Yup, I overlooked him when I was composing the list and have now corrected that error. Thanks!

Thanks, I had a GREAT time, such a good fly-in with great floor level. (BTW it is sfbearhoney, not sfhoneybear)

Doh, Part Deux

That's because my eye's were closed, he couldn't tell it was me.

Sounds fun!

How did your GCA tip go?

I think mine went pretty well, esp considering all of us were a little brain-dead after 11 hours of dancing and/or working.

Congrats

Looks like I missed a great event. Not that I didn't already know that, you guys always put on a great party. Congrats on the success.

Damn. I'll wallow in my regret at not going for just a little longer, but then I must move on. :-) That said, I'm *always* happy to see lovely photos of hot men in and out of squares. :-d

I'll bet Lee G has come a LONG way since his baby steps as a caller at the last GCA school. Too bad he doesn't blog on LJ anymore.

Dave Wilson is diabolical...that's a good word for it! The last IAGSDC convention he called at, I have a strong memory of being in a C2 hall where the entire session was mostly ONE sequence being muddled through over and over until we 'got' it.

Yes, he did very well. I meant to record him calling C1 but I got caught up in setting up my own stuff for the following tip.

In that case, did he still get paid for the same amount as other callers who have written enough material for a whole session? :)

Oh, I think you know that answer to that!
