Twilight Zone

To day is an official holiday from my Dear Employer. Alas, since I'm the UNIX primary point-of-contact this week, I'm technically on duty anyway although it means little more than carrying the pager constantly and not being too far away from a telephone and/or terminal.

I'm not thrilled about being in this employer created twilight zone of working/not working, but it's better than being compelled to drive to Urbana to sit in my cube and do nothing for eight hours, especially since it's 80% certain there will be no issues today. If nothing else, I can spend the day working on misc domestic chores around the house effectively on the company tab.

It sucks to not be able to maximize a 3- or 4-day weekend because you're on-call. When our on-call coverage includes a company holiday, we get a comp day to reflect the fact that our use of the day off was effectively squelched by having to remain near a computer.
