The hottub is now emptied and winterized.

We had originally planned to do this in the fall as we typically do every year but this time we thought we'd leave the tub running on the chance we (esp. Michael) might use it during the winter. That, however, hasn't happened. Worse, the electric bill for December arrived last week. Oy.

Earlier today, we cut the power to the tub and began draining. This evening, we scooped out the remaining water. Tomorrow, we'll wrap up the beast until spring.

We'll miss you, hottub!

So, the whole, "hatchet to the cord" thing is probably pretty satisfying, but wouldn't it have been easier to get going again next year if you had just unplugged it before draining it?

Weren't you going to put a shelter over it so you could use it year 'round?

It was a simple matter of flipping the circuit breakers and cutting the power at the outdoor fuse box. The power to the backyard was the income tax return of 2003 or so.

Draining it was critical tonight once we disconnected the power. It's supposed to get much colder for the rest of the weekend and we feared the water in the pump & plumbing would freeze and destroy the innards. The 400+ gallons in the tub itself probably wouldn't have frozen but there was a chance.

Yeah, there was a shelter idea but doing it right is a very expensive proposition. We decided to buy a tropical island instead.

Hey, I'm not dropping in there if there's no hottub.

Just give us a little advanced warning... we'll power it back up. And then shut it down again once you board your flight. :-)

And can you be sure that dreary dirty white stuff all over the place is cleaned up before I get there? Californians aren't spoiled, they just aren't used to uncivilized conditions.

Give us two more days and the snow will be gone. Sadly.

If you could keep it clean, it might even be pretty! I might be there for those cherry blossoms.
