I finally managed to take apart my Sony Vaio laptop and extract the hard drive.

Problem: The laptop hard drive is serial ATA, but the external disk enclosure I have is IDE. Damn!

I can't think of any other machine to which I have immediate access that supports serial ATA, except perhaps [livejournal.com profile] kent4str's iMac which I doubt he'd let me dismantle even if our lives depended on it.

The replacement power supply for my Vaio should be arriving in about one week. I think I'll just reassemble the laptop and try to be patient until I can power it up again on its own terms. *sigh*

CompUSA (and most other reasonable computer stores) carry a SATA to USB converter to allow you to attach a drive to another computer to recover data. It is about 30 to 50 bucks, and should allow all 3 different types of hard drives to be converted to USB.

That's a possibility I'm holding in reserve.

One of my co-workers may have a spare Sony power supply at home; she'll look tonight and possibly bring it to the office tomorrow. If that doesn't work out, I can either get the SATA enclosure you describe or wait for the eBay-purchased power supply to arrive, depending on how rushed I feel.

Borrow another (already-charged) battery and use it to power up the laptop and transfer the data off?

I only know of two people who have similar models of laptops; one is in Florida, the other is in-state but I don't have the time available for the drive required. If only the problem had occurred a week ago...
