For God's Sake, It's Just a Snowflake.

It snowed in Washington, DC, today so naturally IQs have plummeted to a mere 25% of their already very low value.

My commute to work too twice as long because folks insisted in driving 20 mph in 55 mph zones, slower yet in other areas. This wouldn't bother me so much if they didn't insist on driving abreast each other to block all lanes. I bypassed the DC beltway entirely because it was clearly gridlocked in both directions and all lanes.

One clown I followed into my office parking lot straddled both lanes of the highway, the off-ramp, the intersection and the company driveway; I finally passed him when he had to make a decision about which gate to enter.

It's not even a heavy snow! At best, it's an inch of dry, fluffy snow, not heavy or wet in any fashion. Visibility was very good too. There's just no excuse. As was said in an office e-mail this morning, "The roads aren't bad... it's the drivers that are ugly."

Now that I'm here at work, I may be in for an extended day depending on how many others make it. I'm not looking forward to the return commute although the warmer temperatures may melt all this away by then.

I love it when people drive in wall formation. It's up there with people walking in wall formation as well.

It is comically sad that some people get all freaky at slightest hint of snow falling and act accordingly, especially when driving in it.

I can see being cautious when there is 5" or more and it's wet and slick or hell even icy but this dry powder stuff that is perhaps an 1" or an inch and a half at best.

I'm thankful I have a brother in law who grew up in Wisconsin and knows all about driving in the white stuff and he taught me years ago how to do so in my 1974 Chevy Nova. Had to really test those skills the following year when a major snow storm hit Tacoma that when all done had dumped 10-12" of snow on the ground but when it began, it was just starting as I drove to school (college) and by 11am, there were 2-3" of the white stuff and snowing heavily. I had by then moved up to a '78 Chevy Nova and was able to drive home with virtually no problems - well, except for the difficulty of seeing the traffic lights for all the snow falling, without usable chains or cables either. :-)

There are many, many things about DC that I miss. There are many that I don't.

Wintertime in DC is definitely in the "don't" category.

troube is, the winter around here is on the edge of being plain ice. Did you get home yet, and how long did it take you, Brian? Linda skated home the entire way tonight, said it was very icy and slick. I'd trade it all for the nice snow of up north, where it really is snow, and drivable, but this freezing rain/slush/ice junk we get here? Nobody has a chance.

I found I270 and the inner loop of 495 to be wet but otherwise fine. My homeward commute was about 35 minutes, 10 less than usual because there were many fewer vehicles on the road.
