I have a Sun E250 resyncing its file systems for the next hour or so, so I might as well catch up on recent events.

As expected, I'm the nominated secretary for the corporation which will organize & host the 2009 IAGSDC convention. This will become official once we submit the papers for incorporation. I still have to finish typing the minutes from last Thursday's meeting, but I should get to that by the end of today.

We had seven newbies dancing in Baltimore last night at the second of three open house events. That's more than they've had in the past two years combined. I don't know if we'll be able to keep them all for classes... that will largely depend on the scheduling of the Mainstream class. Cross your fingers.

Kent & I are calling all of next Tuesday night's club night & open house. It will be a refresher for the newbies of the past two weeks; the pace will largely depend on whether there are additional new bodies who need to catch up. Otherwise, we'll review the 10-12 calls Dayle has taught, then add on a few selected others yet to be determined (again, work for tonight). Toss in a demo tip of the Plus folks to keep the regulars happy and we'll have a fun evening.

I've been looking at some pieces of music to add to the calling library, esp. based on recommendations from the recent GCA caller school. I wasn't originally impressed with the selection from Aussie Tempo but Bronc Wise encouraged me to give them another listen; I ordered "A Little Bit More" (AT 1014), "Truly, Madly, Deeply" (AT 1009) and "Tempos Tantrum" (AT 1011) last week. The first two seemed a little bland at first, but I realized that Bronc was right: because they lack a strong melody track, I no longer have to worry about changing my own vocal range so I can be heard around the music. The latter was largely bought on whimsy, simply because it sounded cute & bouncy. I'll have to see if that holds up under fire on a club night.

Other pieces I may yet use for patter calls include "Monkey See Monkey Do" by Bjorn Lynne and "Peaches" by Dario G, both electronica. Vengaboys was mentioned at caller school as well: "Up and Down" and "You and Me" may both work but I want to edit out the intro on each before using them. I also checked on In-Grid, and while I didn't find anything appealing to me for square dancing, I'll likely by a CD or two just for my personal music collection. All are on iTunes.

Should I be offering congratulations or condolances on your official rise to the position of "guy in charge of convention"? :-) Maybe a little of both?

Did you talk at all about whether there would be an honorarium(sp) for which ever student who's logo is picked? I have them working on thumbnails now, and I should have a package of logo concepts off to you next Wednesday. I will need it turned around pretty quickly since the semester is winding up with alarming speed.
