A reporter from the Baltimore Sun happened by the dance pavilion at the city's gay pride festival last Sunday.
kent4str and I were just wrapping up an intro-to-dancing session with the Chesapeake Squares; the reporter stopped to ask a few questions.
Since we were already in full public demo mode, we had our talking points ready: square dancing is fun, social & healthy, we've been around for a while, we have an open house coming up, no prior experience is required, etc., etc.. We also ensured he had the Chesapeake Squares' brochure, business card and upcoming dance schedule in his hands before he left.
From that brief 5 minute conversation, we got a few paragraphs in an article covering the entire pride festival itself, available here.
I will now happily autograph various body parts on request.
Last night's regular Chesapeake Squares' club night went well.
kent4str came along with me for immoral support but didn't call and I'm still more or less recovering from the gigs of Sunday and Monday. I suspected there would be few dancers even showing up because it's so soon after the all-day pride festival.
To my surprise, there were lots of bodies willing to dance, even with several occupied with a board meeting. Due to heat and humidity, we started gently with slower music but we finished the evening two hours later with a couple of high energy pieces: everyone left the floor giggling and laughing.
In my own self-assessment, my A2 was harder than it should have been... I have to review all of my material and write a pile more, keeping sequences short to medium length and inserting checkpoints where needed. On the good side, these were some of the best singing calls I've ever done and the dancers seemed as delighted with the results as I was. Yay!
We're skipping the C1 dancing tonight and probably DC's club night to catch up on rest and prepare for teaching a Plus class next week, calling for Chesapeake Squares's open house and DC's club night.
