Square Dancing OMG.
Jun. 6th, 2007 11:26 pmTonight, we had our small C1 group dancing in Arlington with Doren McBroom. We had nearly enough bodies for two squares, much more than usually attend. Doren gracefully offered me a tip so I pulled out the laptop & mic --yes, I was hoping-- and test-drove some of the material I'm planning to use on Monday.
Unbeknownst to me, sabotage was afoot...
In the middle of my 4th figure or so, Doren slipped a note to me: "Work 'pass out.'" Okaaaaay... Presuming he wanted to illustrate a point of some kind, I flipped to sight-calling a figure. I brought them to an 8-chain-thru position and called 'pass out' --and every dancer on the floor instantly collapsed in a heap.
None of us could dance or call for two full minutes. Bitches. :-)
When we recovered, the rest of the tip went well. There's a couple of lefty calls which I may flag for extra cuing and one spot of overflow I want to fix, but the rest seemed solid. I still have some writing to do in the next couple of days, then spend the weekend running checkers against the material to confirm flow and handedness. Whee!

About 25 years ago, Anne U. had a habit of saying "nice clap" after she called wheel thru. At a convention with 20+ squares on the C1 floor she started her tip with wheel thru and we all just stood and applauded. After a few minutes, she recovered and managed to say "Really nice clap". You're in good company.
