It's Official!

Our late square dance caller, Warren Jaquith, used to call two club nights per month with the DC Lambda Squares. With his passing, the board has had to quickly juggle the dance schedule; fortunately, previously scheduled special events (the annual general meeting this week, advanced & challenge the week follow, the church being unavailable the first club night in April, etc.) gave the board the space to make considered & thoughtful change.

One of their decisions was to formally ask kent4str and I to fill one of Warren's club nights. Similar to our arrangement with the Chesapeake Squares, they're not particular about whether kent4str, me or both of us call that night, just that we ensure someone is on mic.

The other club night will be rotated among guest callers, both local and regional.

Of course, there will be a new board in place on Thursday but our feeling is that they will be busy learning their new roles. The new board may revisit this arrangement but we're probably good for the next several months.

Even though the circumstances are anything but joyous, it did present you two with a good opportunity. I am happy to hear that you two will get more mic time. I hope you have fun with it.

It's a rather odd feeling... This is the second time we've gained as square dance callers through the death of another. Most of our initial music collection and my microphone were passed along from the late Tom Hollaran, also a former DCLS caller.

I like to think of these objects & symbols as being held in trust, to be passed to the next generation of callers when the time is right.

I was calling in Baltimore last night and was ready to record the lot for you, but my battery died immediately on powering up my digital recorder. :-( I'm packing extra batteries now and will try again at my next gig.

DUDE!!

so, I was at the beginner class last night to visit with some new friends at the DCLS club, and danced to the smooth calling of both Brian and Kent. On the docket for last night was the teach for "california twirl" and they taught the sound-flourish for the call, which turned out to be "DUDE!"

I fell on the floor laughing. The floor out there yelling "DUDE!" as they california twirled. What fun... ! so, where did that come from, again??

I'm glad you all were/are there to fill in for Warren. It's true, you have some pretty big shoes to fill, but I think your shoes are big enough and you'll do a great job.
