The Week Ahead

I'm the UNIX primary at work for Monday through Thursday. This means if anyone anywhere in the corporation has any issue --past, present or future-- they suspect might involve a UNIX server or workstation at any time, my pager will ring. Joy.

This of course makes my hour-to-hour planning nearly impossible: heaven knows when I might get dragged off to fix some catastrophic (or trivial) issue. I could usually drag other people in UNIX support into the issue to help if I have more than one problem, but two of my team decided to announce Friday afternoon that they wanted to take this week off for vacation. Thanks for the advanced warning, guys... if I were your manager, I'd have refused your request.

Tonight, DC Lambda Squares will have our first dance session since Warren Jaquith passed away last week. This would have been the sixth in a series of Mainstream level classes he was teaching; since last week's class was scrubbed and tonight will be dedicated to a small memorial service in his honour and some review if people are up for it.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be largely clear.

Thursday is Dining Out For Life, an annual fundraiser for Food & Friends in which participating restaurants donate a percentage of their sales. DCLS is assembling a crowd for 6 PM at Annie's Paramount Steakhouse before our 7:30 PM club night with Dayle Hodge.

And Friday I'm taking off work. We were originally going to fly to Cleveland for the weekend but we've cancelled our plans to attend Warren's memorial service 3 PM, Saturday, March 10. If I can't squeeze in a haircut before then, I'll get it Friday.

Relax. with any luck at all, not only will the pager fail, your laptop, your microphone, your palm pilot AND the 45rpm turntable will fail, and the needy ones won't be able to get in touch with you until the eeejuts who bailed off on vacation on 12h notice get back.

just make sure you don't move operations outdoors, because if that thunderstorm gets any closer, all bets are off.

tonight's beginner class went great...

You and Kent did great tonight at the beginner class. I was honored to be there for the little club memorial of Warren, and then to take part in the beginner dancing, with you two at the helm. You will do great with the group. The rapport was there, they trust you, and you will have fun with them. Keep up the great work, keep Warren's memory in mind, and we'll see you Saturday at the memorial. Warren, our shining light... will shine forever. I would be joining you all for the Dining Out for Life night on Thursday, but that day is the third anniversary of my father's death, and my sister and I will be spending the evening with my mother, who lives alone now at the age of 85. Please know that my heart and soul are with you all as well at Annie's.
