When Geeks Shop
Jan. 26th, 2007 12:11 pmOver the past couple of months, I've been toying with getting myself a new Mac Book for my birthday. They're sharp, plenty powerful and lots of fun. They are also very expensive. After some consideration, I've decided the money is better spent paying down our mortgage than indulging myself in a new laptop, no matter how cool & spiffy the laptop might be. Yes, Mom, I'm lovingly setting an example for you to follow.
To keep my technical skills up to par, I'm looking to deploy Solaris 10 on one of my home boxes. While deployment of Solaris 10 at my office is inevitable, my employer seems determined to keep it a surprise from everyone, including my Unix Engineering team. Since I can't get reasonable training there, I'll do it myself at home.
I'll install Solaris 10 swap hard drives on my XP box to ensure that I don't blow away mypr0n valuable data files by mistake (I do, of course, have backups on hand). Since the mirrored 36 GB disks in my Linux box are getting a little small these days, I'm inclined to get two new bloody huge drives for it, then use the 36 GB disks for my Solaris 10 tinkering. The 750 GB Barracuda drives are probably overkill... 250 GB would be more my speed.
And my Linux box is due for an OS refresh. I've been upgrading & replacing chunks of an older Red Hat installation for the past few years... a wholly new installation of someone's latest & greatest is probably the way to go, although I dread re-tinkering with Apache, majordomo and a stack of other apps.
