A group of six of us went to see "Pan's Labyrinth" at the AFI Silver Theater here in Silver Spring, MD.

My friends were a little surprised by the degree of graphic violence --the movie is set in the summer of 1944, in the late stages of the Spanish civil war-- although it was less violent than I was expecting based on reviews I've read. The movie is indeed very well done: the special effects are effectively presented, the transitions between Ofelia's fantasy world and the real world are seamless and cleverly performed, and all performances were superb.

No spoilers, just a comment that this movie was worth paying full ticket price for, unlike most dreck these days which are barely worth a matinee rate.

We saw it too. The only review we saw before going said "An adult fairy tale." That was all the warning we had, so we were surprised by the violence (Jason almost wretched in the popcorn bucket; thankfully I'd finished it) but agreed that the movie was excellent.
