We now bring you a message from the Canadian Ambassador to the United States:

The purpose of this message is to provide to you the latest consular advice from Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs in an effort to reach as many Canadians as we can throughout the United States. Many of you receiving this message will be outside of the path of Hurricane Rita. But given the intensity and extreme danger posed by this storm, we are sending you the consular alert as we are working all of our channels to reach as many Canadians as we can. If you know Canadians who may be in the projected path of Rita, we ask that you forward this note to them, especially so that they are aware of the 1-888 toll-free number the Government of Canada operates 24/7 for Canadians in distress.

Our latest consular alert states:

"In preparation for Rita, Munroe County ordered a mandatory evacuation of the Florida Keys on September 18, 2005. On September 20, 2005, a state of emergency was declared for Galveston County in Texas, where mandatory evacuations are also in effect. Canadians are advised against all travel to these regions until further notice.

Canadians in the projected path of hurricane Rita who are concerned with their safety should make plans to temporarily leave the area and inform friends and family of their current whereabouts. Canadians residing in or travelling to these areas should monitor local news and weather reports, follow the advice of local authorities, and contact their travel agent or tour operator to determine whether the situation will disrupt travel arrangements.

Canadians in the area seeking emergency consular assistance should contact the Emergency Operations Centre in Ottawa toll-free at 1 888 949-9993 or call collect (613) 996-8885."

Our consular teams in Texas continue their work from Katrina, and are mobilized for Rita. They can be reached at 214-922-9806.

Updated alerts are available here: www.voyage.gc.ca/main/sos/ci/cur-en.asp.

For those of you with friends and family in the affected regions, know that you are in the hearts and prayers of Canadians all across the country. As with Katrina, Canada will be there with our American friends to help in any way that we can (www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/can-am/washington/home_page/katrina-en.asp).

Sincerely,

Frank McKenna
Ambassador of Canada to the United States

If you're in front of Rita, get out now.

nope, no Canadians in New Mexico. Nada. They all got irritated when they found out we didn't have any beaches and don't come.

I've been to NM... it's darn near all beach & sand. There's just no water on said beach.

I grew up with yet another &%#$*! river or lake every two freakin' miles. Deserts freak me out.
