This morning, I walked out the door to work forgetting my laptop at home. I discovered this 32 miles later in the parking lot of the office when I noticed that my backpack was lighter than usual. Of course, driving back would take 1.5 hours thank to morning commuter traffic. Ugh.

At the moment, I'm working from my Sun workstation. Most of my working files are on the laptop but at least I can use an ancient version of Netscape to get to the critical stuff like e-mail and LJ. I'll probably depart in the late morning, then telecommute the balance of the day from home.

Doh!

Now that they've made me laptopable (that sounds dirty), my stomach clenches every so often when I don't remember that I actually DID place the laptop in the back seat of my car to bring back to work.

My office did the usual thing: they creatd a really dumb laptop policy. It has two parts:

1. If you have a laptop, you're required to take it home with you every night.
2. No one gets desktops anymore, just laptops.

There might actually be a business justification: consolidating the number of supported models saves money. Still, forcing laptops to commute home & back means potential damage & loss, esp. compared to simply locking one's laptop in one's office filing cabinet.

My cynical mind leads me to believe it's also their subtle way of saying every employee is on call 24x7. :-^

I'm SO glad when others post this kind of thing. It means I'm not alone in the world!

Or worse yet, work for a place that still have have some people working on old Compaq celeron boxes and one machine that's used sparingly is an old pII, compaq simple desktop box.

Some of then have newer Dells so it's not a total ancient situation. :-)

And yes, I use the old Compaq box at work. They are OK actually but still...
