Geeky Home Upgrades
Aug. 3rd, 2011 11:23 pmI've been catching up with some computer system changes at home the past couple of days, and am really enjoying the change.
I've been running with DSL for broadband access for the 11 years we've been living in our current house. I use it extensively for work as well as for my home Linux server so I've been very hesitant to replace it with something better or faster: I need consistent reliability more than I need blazing speed. Many of the replacement options also come with port blocking which would make my Linux server unhappy. Still, as our usage expands, more bandwidth would be nice.
In early June, I began migrating the mailing lists housed on my Linux box to outside services. There are many more choices available now so that was an easy transition.
Earlier this week, I bought email and web hosting services from an outside provider for my two domains. Despite mixed reviews, I went with Go Daddy, mostly because I was already using them as my domain registrar. The transition of services was pretty smooth and I even created a simple web site using their online tools & templates. The hardest part of the move was repointing my Blackberry to my new service and that was a Blackberry issue.
Yesterday, I ordered Verizon FIOS for our Internet service and bundle in our telephone service. Installation is scheduled for next Monday.
Last night, I backed up the old Suse Linux 10 system. This morning, I installed Ubuntu 11 Linux on the old hardware. Tomorrow, I'll set up virtual servers, then build an experimental Hadoop cluster, although I may wait until I have the faster Internet connection FIOS promises.
