Cleveland, Day 3
Jul. 1st, 2008 11:14 pmThe Gay Callers Association caller school continued today. I did some dancing for the newbie callers in the beginner room; I've hardly stepped a food in the intermediate & advanced rooms thus far but I think the newbies are more fun anyway. :-)
I sat with some of the new folks to answer easy questions about choreography and help them think about the figures they're writing, what aspects flow nicely, whichsuck bilge water are less than optimal and how to use delivery to get the best results from the floor. It's a wonderful feeling to return the goodwill and patience I received during my first few years.
In the late afternoon, a truck with 50 pallets of flooring tiles arrived from Wichita, KS. It arrived earlier than expected so we were short on volunteers: we had three Cleveland people, three Grand Rapids folks and myself bringing the pallets down a narrow ramp off the truck, pushing them into the hotel and delivering them to the third floor ballrooms. I was exhausted. Ten more pallets arrived later in the day. Memo to the 2009 folks: we will need a team of at least a dozen strong people to push these babies around efficiently.
I've been taking notes about the logistics & requirements of the caller school, both the items provided by the GCA (audio equipment, signage, stationery, etc.) and the convention (dance spaces, tables, electricity, water/refreshments, accommodations, etc.). I'm sure Brian K and Ken R will have a lot more advice from both sides when the dust settles a little.
In the occasional spare few minutes here & there, I've also been assembling my rough notes for an article for the GCA newsletter on running a local caller clinic, using the experiences
kent4str and I have from both benefiting from such and hosting the same for our own local newbie callers. We have to think seriously about another such workshop chez nous for some time soon after the convention so Happy, Abe and
meinfs have practice time and reinforcement of all they've learned thus far.
I'm preparing for my report to the IAGSDC delegates Thursday afternoon on behalf of the GCA. I'm working the theme of leadership and club development. Callers, even in member-run clubs, are community leaders by default: investing in up & coming new callers is an investment in the future of the club, its quality of dancing and its opportunities for growth.
Lastly, our club is making plans to pin yet another name to the IAGSDC memorial quilt, this time for Scott Upright, partner of Elwin Aspegren. He passed away June 25. Just once, I'd like to get through an IAGSDC convention without the death of a friend.
I'm about to prepare for bed. As I write this, I'm sitting naked in the dining room as my clothes of today and the past few days are in the washing machine. Tomorrow morning, we check into the convention hotel. I'll be spending some time with the beginner class once again, then moving down to the convention office to help stuff registration packets, as well as absorb more information and/or gossip about the trials & pitfalls from the inside of running a convention.

The new business cards are a hit, thank you so much!
We miss you both terribly... it's not a real convention without you. :-(
