When we began planning our trip to the IAGSDC convention in Cleveland, it was with the intent of rooming with [livejournal.com profile] tdjohnsn and [livejournal.com profile] rlegters and the under the presumption that at least one of us would be attending the GCA caller school. Accordingly, [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr booked us a room at the convention hotel for June 28 through July 7.

Sadly, [livejournal.com profile] tdjohnsn and [livejournal.com profile] rlegters won't be attending this year. While [livejournal.com profile] kent4str and I may assist as dancers at the caller school, we're not enrolled this year.

After some discussion yesterday, we've decided we're still going to head to Cleveland on June 28 but we'll crash chez [livejournal.com profile] ohwolfman until Wednesday, then check into the convention hotel. Estimated savings: $600 USD. Since we're driving to Cleveland rather than flying, this may be our cheapest convention yet!

The first band of storms just zipped over my office. For 10 minutes, we had torrential rains such that I couldn't see the gatehouse of our facility from my cube. Wind was intense enough that small trees on the grounds were pushed nearly flat.

A heavy storm and tornado watch continues in the greater Washington DC area until 8 PM tonight.

The commute home is gonna suck.

PS. Just talked to [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr... the house still has electricity but the DSL is down. Whee.

Well, the power has failed here at home. Indeed, a large swath of the area is without electricity, taking out the traffic lights. From radio reports, most of the side streets I would have used for my home-ward commute were closed because of downed trees. In all, it took two hours to get home instead of 35 minutes.

At the moment, the DSL modem & router are running on UPS power and my laptop is on batteries. The other computers are powered down. We've opted to not attempt square dancing tonight because of the threat of further storms later tonight so we're sitting at home with nothing to do. Figures.

Edit: Right now, I'm so glad I have one of these since the basement computer room has no windows.

We have no electricity so the electric sparker in the oven wouldn't work; [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr finished cooking the half-done meat loaf in the barbecue grill in the back yard.

My pager keeps going off with requests from the Oracle database administrators to run some script or another as root. Not a big deal but the UPS died just before the last run so I had no Internet connectivity. We got the job done though by plugging a power inverter into the cigarette lighter of the minivan in the driveway, then running an extension cord into the computer room to power the DSL modem & router. All done!

Going back to sitting in the dark now...

Oh, precious electricity! Thank god you've returned to work your magic on my Internet connection and our AC!
