Tonight, I called A2 for the Zig Zaggers in Northern Virginia. It was a bit of a roller coaster evening for me but lots of fun nonetheless.
When I first arrived at the hall 20 minutes before show time, the place was dark and the doors were locked. Not a good sign. No one answered the door buzzer, our regular event coordinator was somewhere in California and I had no contact information for the place. Fortunately, five minutes later a staffer came running to the front, apologizing profusely for having forgotten to come unlock the doors earlier. Crisis averted.
When 8 PM rolled around, we had just three couples. Suddenly, we saw the headlights of a car pulling into the lot. Juanita & Tonya had arrived, averting the second crisis.
By the second tip, we had seven couples, just one couple shy of a second square. I'm happy we had at least one square functioning but it is very frustrating for everyone to have three couples sitting out. Fortunately, Lloyd & Larry arrived by the second figure so we had two squares for the rest of the evening.
I'm delighted to report all of my figures were at least as good as I hoped: none sucked out loud or needed to be redrafted. We had to do some walk-thrus on the "all 8" and "all 4 couples" calls but I've come to assume they need extra cuing just about everywhere I've ever called. I was a little surprised that "switch the wave" was causing heartburn for a couple of people --as centers, they wanted to cross-run instead of run-- but we worked that out in a break. My Advanced material tends to be nearly equally balanced between right-handed & left-handed calls so the non-DCLS dancers were a little sluggish on the lefty calls but they were very complimentary during breaks and acknowledged the practice was a good & necessary thing.
In all, there were lots of praise from the dancers at the close of the night and they were generally smiling so I'm considering the evening a success. As was pointed out to me, where else can you get paid $112 to voluntarily twist the minds of 16 people over two hours?
