DC Lambda Squares' Mainstream Class #13
Dec. 11th, 2006 10:40 pmThis was the final class of new calls. We've done the entire list! Yay!
This week, we had a very quick & condensed warm-up which went by rather well. New calls for the session included "walk & dodge," "recycle," "scoot back," "spin chain thru" and the "tag the line" family (tag the line, half-tag the line, 3/4 tag the line). I would have preferred an extra half-hour for practice and drill but such is life.
"Pass the ocean" was causing some headaches suddenly; they've been doing it well for weeks so I was a little surprised. There was the normal confusion about circulate and trade, as well as circulate and split circulate. The anticipated horrors of recalling last week's "spin the top" didn't materialize, and neither did this week's "spin chain thru." Amazingly, they didn't seem to get confused between the pair of these similar-sounding calls either.
"Scoot back" only had a minor issue in that dancers scooting into the middle wanted to use an opposite hand to do the scoot rather than the hand they had held with their partner. I can't fault them for this: re-using the same hand just doesn't flow naturally and square dance callers would be bitch-slapped by dancers --and caller coaches-- for allowing this hand usage in any other circumstance. In this instance however, it's required.
Next Monday is our final session. We'll drill the entire list, adding flourishes were appropriate. Graduation is the Dec 21 club night.
