Work has been non-stop since arriving at 8 AM. Yesterday, I wasn't particularly effective at the office: I felt I was wandering around in a slight daze, accomplishing almost nothing. Today, I had to get my act together to tackle all of the things which should have been done previously, and handle the new items being tossed over the wall at me. And, fortunately, everything has fallen together as they should.
I've just finished dashing off a number of work tickets for our night & weekend UNIX shifts, our backup support team and our logging & monitoring team to retire & decommission eight servers. Within the next two weeks, I will be rid of the last of my NIS+ servers as well as the last of my Solaris 2.6 machines.
Overall, the number of servers I care for will be reduced to 382, although there are two new builds assigned to me for completion before the month is out. I believe there are other new builds in progress elsewhere in my team --I've been keeping at arm's length from those projects as I have enough on my plate currently-- so the net total of servers at the end of the year will likely be around 390 or so. Out of a total of 3,900 servers maintained by our overall division, our group of almost 400 makes us the third largest UNIX support team in the firm.
Off to another conference call...
