Mainstream Class, Week #10
Nov. 14th, 2006 09:14 amThe mainstream square dance class class had a slow start last night: there was some church function occuring elsewhere in the building so the parking lot was largely full when we arrived. Anyone following us probably had to circle the neighbourhood a few times to find a place for their car. We used the extra time for a few warm-up tips until all of the newbies were on the floor.
Tonight's new material was easily absorbed by our new dancers: chain down the line, trade by and wheel around. They already had "circle to a line" but it was pretty ugly the first two times we used it; with a little practise however, they were handling that one like pros by the end of the evening.
We did more half-sashayed calls as well. While we have of course introduced these in earlier classes, the new dancers lacked the experience and longer list of calls to be able to recognize the difference between sex-based calls (eg. star thru) and left-hand vs. right-hand dancer calls (eg. partner trade from non-miniwave positions). We talked about it for a few minutes, then ran through some examples (eg. pass the ocean) from normal and half-sashayed positions to illustrate the idea without belaboring it too much. It'll be a good supplementary workshop topic later on.
There are about 19 calls left for four more weeks. Some are trivial (single hinge, fold) while some will require a little more effort (flutterwheel, scoot back) but we're on schedule and I'm confident the new folks will absorb it all without difficulty.
