bjarvis: (sleeping)
I didn't sleep worth a damn last night and am barely awake. This is not good. Fortunately, Tuesdays at the office are not mentally demanding so I should be able to slum my way through the hours. In the negative column, I was hoping to attend John Marshall's A2 session tonight in Virginia but I'm not sure I'm sufficiently awake for the mental challenge. Perhaps if I can get a nap in the late afternoon.

Aw, crap. Earthlink, my ISP, has implemented authenticated SMTP suddenly. While this is generally a good thing --every ISP should have done this a long time ago as a spam-containment measure-- it means all outgoing e-mail from my server will fail until I change the sendmail settings. Figures: just when I'm brain-dead...

Finally!

After much pain & trauma, I finally got my Linux box to talk nicely with Earthlink yet again.

Without prior notice, Earthlink switched their SMTP service to AUTH SMTP. This isn't a major issue and most mail clients can be converted with a couple of quick clicks. Sendmail, however, turned out to the a cast iron bitch. In the end, I upgraded Sendmail to the latest & greatest, updated the SASL application and spent most of the day debugging issues and exploring alternatives. It shouldn't have been this difficult, and perhaps it wouldn't have been if I was firing on all cylinders. Ah, well.

The spam filters are still off-line but I'll worry about that tomorrow. I'm going to sleep now.
