bjarvis: (Chesapeake Squares)
[livejournal.com profile] kent4str & I called the square dance portion of Chesapeake Squares' open house last night. The prior Tuesday, we had only one newbie and her partner who was a lapsed CS member; this time, we had at least six newbies, not including repeat appearances from the prior week.

We also learned there would be another open house coming up on Tuesday, August 22. Being in the latter portion of the month, [livejournal.com profile] kent4str & I would be calling for that event unless some event transpires to force a trading of nights with Dayle.

The new folks are a clueful bunch! They quickly absorbed everything we threw their way in two separate sessions. It wasn't a particularly difficult list --by design, of course-- but I was impressed how easily they adapted. Now to see if we can translate these numbers into a new Mainstream class series...

I'm 95% done my lesson plans for the September-December Mainstream class with DC Lambda Squares. This draft largely maintains the CALLERLAB recommended teaching order with some modifications. For example, "cast off 3/4" appears before "spin the top" in my plan, rather than later in CALLERLAB's. I've moved "touch 1/4" and "run" up the list as well. Still, my adjustments are largely cosmetic and we have another 1.5 months to make revisions if needed. [livejournal.com profile] kent4str now gets to critique my draft. :-)

bjarvis: (Maryland state)
Equality Maryland has been fighting to establish & protect LGBT rights in Maryland for many years. With limited resources, they've been surprisingly effective and while the state legislature has been gay-friendly in recent years, the governor is distinctly not. The state house & senate have kept some of his more odious work in check but in this election cycle, we can take no chances.

To further their work in the coming elections, Equality Maryland has established a political action committee (PAC) to funnel money to candidates supportive of equality for all citizens. If you can spare a few dollars to help further equality for all, please read below.

bjarvis: (DC Lambda Squares)
The DC Lambda Squares is going tubing on Antietam Creek in West Virginia (near Harper's Ferry, WV) this coming Saturday, July 29, 10 AM to 4 PM. We had a blast last year and I'm looking forward to bobbing down the creek again this weekend.

We will be meeting at Manidokan Campground in Maryland Saturday morning at 10 AM.

All are welcome to join us... I'll answer any questions I can.

While driving home from work this afternoon, I was passed by a hearse. I was doing 70 mph easily... he roared past me as though I were standing still.

All I could think was, Seriously dude, it's a little late to be rushing somewhere...
