Morning work rant
Sep. 8th, 2005 10:41 amI haven't written much lately, largely because there's precious little to write about.
This morning, I arrived at the office and received three only-you-can-save-the-planet-from-imminent-doom telephone calls from three different senior managers, along with one sorry-I-won't-be-in-to-work-today. Overworked and understaffed. Whee.
After calling my dentist to reschedule this afternoon's cleaning, I started working on the miscellaneous problems, resolving them one by one. Just as I wrapped up the entire mess with a sense of victory, each of the original managers contacted me to explain that they've since found out that the initial problem wasn't really an issue after all, was tackled by someone else previously without their knowledge, or was simply cancelled without explanation. In short, I've just spent the bulk of my morning rescheduling my usual workload, making telephone calls, paging people, sending e-mails, searching the web, submitting requests and fast-tracking issues to various other departments, all for nothing.
I accept that emergencies and unforeseen circumstances happen, but I have a very low tolerance for poor planning & lack of communication and no patience at all for waste, especially of my time. It is days like this I wish I was still a contractor so I could at least have the pleasure of billing them for their mistakes. Grrr.
If I wasn't the only one of my team reporting to work at my facility today, I'd take the rest of the day off.
