Rodeo Weekend
Sep. 12th, 2005 03:09 pmI haven't had a weekend this good in a long time.
Ohio friends Rik & Rob were on vacation in the general area, working their way north from Richmond. They moved into our guest room on Thursday afternoon. I had originally planned to head to our regular DC Lambda Squares club night as Howard Richman was in town calling, but ultimately the four of us opted for a lazy night sitting around the house, watching TV, eating & chatting.
I worked Friday as usual but Kent was still off his feed from a lingering cold which is now largely manifesting itself in coughing and (unbelievably loud) snoring. R&R headed into downtown DC to be touristy.
That night was the opening dance for the ASGRA rodeo, the annual gay rodeo event centered in DC. The eye candy was quite delightful and we met up with a number of men we haven't seen since the last event. I'm still recovering from the whiplash. :-)
We spent the bulk of Saturday afternoon at the rodeo grounds in Gaithersburg, MD. DCLS had two demo sessions and we had a surprisingly successful time getting newbies onto the dance floor for a 15 minute intro to square dancing. I believe we had four full squares for the intro session. I credit Howard in large part for for his enthusiastic calling.
The four of us were quite fatigued by the high-energy dancing, especially in the warm & humid air. Rather than standing in the refreshments line, we piled into the car and headed for Dairy Queen down the road where a large chocolate sundae had been calling me telepathically. Eventually, we trundled home for a brief nap before heading out for dinner and to the Saturday night dance.
The Saturday evening dance was even better than the prior one: there were still more men, all even more delicious than before. Why, oh, why must this event be only once per year? DCLS had two more very-well attended demos and intro sessions; we stayed to watch the DC Cowboys and Manhattan Prairie Dogs perform before cutting out after midnight and heading home.
All good things must come to an end: Sunday morning, Rik & Rob had to head home to Ohio. They headed out after breakfast; their warm presence was keenly missed the rest of the day. With nothing else on the schedule, I caught up on laundry, sorted files, worked on some A2 choreography, added some photos to my web site, wired money to my sister and generally shopped for more square dance music on iTunes. Unstructured time isn't something I do well, but this was a nice way to wind down the weekend.
