In today's mail, I received my annual Social Security Statement. According to the good folks at the US gov't and the Social Security Administration, I've now worked enough years in the United States to qualify for Social Security.

Of course, [livejournal.com profile] kent4str can't lay claim to my death benefits under current law, but it's nice to know that if I survive long enough to retire and the entire program isn't gutted by the Republicans, I'm at least theoretically qualified to participate.

If you had failed to qualify at retirement, it is possible to transfer some years from Canada's system under some sort of reciprocity agreement, so you have probably already been covered. Neither system pays enough to live on anywhere but some Mexican or Southern backwater.

Yeah, no one ever got rich off of SSA or CPP, but neither should they: they're supposed to keep folks from being completely destitute, not upper middle-class.

I'm still counting on my own retirement savings for the bulk of my old age income... anything from SSA and/or CPP will be welcome icing on the cake.

25 more years to go... :-(
